What are Fascias and Soffits?

The fascia is mounted at the point where the roof meets the outer walls of the house and is often called the ROOFLINE. However most people refer to it by the name of the main board that carries the gutter – the fascias or fascia.

Unfortunately, most people are not familiar with these terms, so we thought it might be helpful for a few words of explanation.

The fascia board is the long, straight board that runs along the underside of the roof. The fascia is fixed to the roof trusses and is usually there to support the bottom row of tiles and carrying all the guttering.

This is quite a demanding task, especially when it is raining heavily. In heavy rain the roof of a typical 3-bedroom semi-detached house could be moving several gallons of rain water per second into the gutters.

This is the board that is placed on the end gable of a house. The look and condition of the bargeboard can often make or break the finished look of a house, especially if you are trying to sell your home. Nowadays it has evolved into some attractive shapes and styles.

The soffit board is tucked under the fascia board. It is usually the board that you can see from street level. The soffit can be ventilated to allow air flow into the roof space. Alternatively, ventilation can be provided over the top of the fascia board. Many people prefer the latter solution these days. Be aware, without adequate ventilation, condensation will form in the roof space increasing the risk of timber decay.

The Box End is a where you can tell the expertise of the installers, accommodating the many different angles and heights of the fascia, soffit and bargeboard at each corner of the house.
